We do not suggest the very tiny “nano” thumb size quadcopters for learning or beginners! Here is why.

We currently DO NOT recommend the following brands – 3D Robotics, Walkera, OnagoFly, GoPro. Also, we have had poor luck with Parrot models in the past – however, we are going to look at more current models soon to see if reliability has changed. Also, be wary of ANY crowdfunded (Kickstarter, etc.) models.

Be sure to pick up at least one extra battery and any spares you may want to have on hand (motors, etc.)

We’ve recently flown the JJRC 1000 and are very impressed by it – it’s a perfect size and reasonable price. Here is a banggood US link to the model. Note – it’s possible that some of the smaller batteries you have for other micro machines will fit it – also, it can sometimes be found without the TX – as it can be flown with many existing WL Toys TX models (we had one that worked with it, so found the bare machine for $15).

Syma has recently introduced the X 11 – which is sized right in-between a micro and a mini. We did a review on it and really enjoyed it, so we feel comfortable suggesting it for a 1st or 2nd quadcopter .

*Dromida Ominus – Another advanced toy grade quadcopter which is getting very good reviews! This is somewhat similar to the WL Toys v636, but perhaps a step up in total quality.

*Syma X8C Venture
This is a larger “toy grade” units which has become quite popular due to it’s reliability and larger payload capability. It comes with a camera that is of poor quality – but still is good for initial learning. The camera can be easily removed and replaced with something of much higher quality like the RunCam or Mobius. This allows decent aerial photography for about $150 total.
The larger size means this is an outdoor-only machine.

NOTE – ALL OF THE ABOVE QUADCOPTERS USE “BRUSHED” MOTORS WHICH WILL NEED REPLACING AFTER A COUPLE HOURS OF FLIGHT. Keep in mind that a couple hours of flight can easily mean 15-30+ total flights as each flight is approx. 6- 8 minutes.

Stepping up in price you find quadcopters with brushless motors (read about them here) which last much longer and are MUCH quicker. That can be a problem for complete beginners as the lower priced brushless models do not have GPS and RTH (automatic Return to Home if too far away).

We recently spent some time flying the XK 251 Brushless Quadcopter and feel it is a GREAT overall machine for the price. This would make a great 2nd machine…maybe for someone who got the hang of the toy machines and wanted to step up to some more exciting and skilled flying. It is very reliable and handles crashes well and can easily carry a small camera. Here is the Banggood link for worldwide purchase. Make sure you buy at least one extra battery and perhaps some spare props and prop nuts.

The HiSky HMX280 is a slightly more “active” example of this breed – here is our review and here is the link to Banggood to Purchase.

The lowest priced Brushless Quadcopter is the JJRC X1 available at this Banggood link. As of this writing it seems to be stocked for both US (direct) shipping as well as worldwide.

Eachine 250 FPV – if you think racing is in your blood, this complete machine provides a bargain – as well as a built-in camera, full FPV (you see what the drones see on an included screen) and more.
As with the others here – this is not for a first quadcopter…but it’s a nice machine. It’s sold by Banggood at this link .
For a slightly higher cost you can get it through Amazon – which may provide faster shipping and a better return policy.

If you are in the $400 range and your eventual goal is to shoot stable video – then perhaps you should spend a bit more and get the Phantom 3 Standard at about $ 400-500 (see below). This machine can shoot almost perfect video and good still photographs and has many of the same features as the big boys.
Note – this model is down to about $450 and can be found “refurb” for less than $350 .

NOTES ABOUT MORE ADVANCED CRAFT (Camera Drones) BELOW:
Most of the quadcopters listed below feature GPS and other stabilization features, making them purpose built for photography and aerial video. Still photography is quite easy to do with a low priced setup – as is amateurish video. However, decent video requires a camera gimbal – which is a device that keeps the camera level and vibration free. In general, fully equipped quadcopters with a gimbal and camera start at about $1000 – except for the new Phantom 3 Standard which is available at $499 or less. (see our review ).

The best “everyday value” in an RTF (ready-to-fly) video package is probably the DJI Phantom 3 series (currently 3 models, Standard, Advanced and Pro) which provides everything you need except for a smartphone or tablet – for a price range from $450-$900 US.
NEW – THE PHANTOM 3 STANDARD MODEL IS FULL FEATURED AND ONLY $499 – HIGHLY RECOMENDED FOR THOSE WHO ARE ON A LOW BUDGET BUT WANT A STABILIZED CAMERA/GIMBAL – however, if you have the money you should move upwards to the Phantom 3 Advanced or Pro models or the Phantom 4 .

NEW – The Phantom 3 Standard for $499 should provide the most for the money for those who desire a camera quadcopter capable of taking stable video and are on a budget (first camera quad, etc.)
This new model may not be for every pro or semi-pro (or “prosumer”), but for those moving up to an advanced camera/gimbal/quadcopter you certainly cannot beat it.

Note – as mentioned above, the Phantom 3 (3 models now!) is now taking over most of the sales of camera equipped quadcopters in the 1K price range. See our recent articles and reviews in the DJI Product section.
If you are interested in aerial video they provide the most bang for the buck, however you may want to also check out the Yuneec Q500 4K and the Blade Chroma models which have their own advantages – specifically a built-in screen on the Remote so you don’t have to use your smart phone or other device (this can be a negative also as the screen is small and not positioned as high up for viewing).

Autel X-Star Premium – this was a $1200 model now reduced to $699. It has the same basic style as the Phantom but is available in Orange (or white). The Camera is as good as that of the Phantom 3 Pro.

This quadcopter is a competitor to the older DJI Phantom 2 models – it has some comparable specs and the camera quality is adequate (not up to the P3 Pro or P4). It is made by a company which is serious about electric aviation. A complete package with case, two batteries, handheld gimbal attachment and more is currently available at Amazon for about $800 –

The Yuneec has a decent reputation – If you want the extras like the option to take the camera/gimbal off the quad and use it handheld, the Yuneec is worth considering. It’s also larger in physical size – this can be an advantage (easier to see) or a disadvantage (harder to carry and store). It does not have the wind resistance and feature set of the DJI Phantom 3 and 4 models.

If you’re a beginner to this hobby and you’re looking for a quad copter under $ 100, this might be the best choice for you.

The reason we have listed this at the first position is because of its SAFE technology. SAFE or Sensor Assisted Flight Envelope is basically an electronic stabilization system that keeps you from crashing and also helps you during takeoff.

Most beginners – unless they have spent a substantial amount of time training on a simulator – would do well to choose a drone that is electronically stabilized. Or else crashes will be all too frequent and can result in a lot of downtime.

With this model however, if you lose control all you need to do is just let go of the controls and the quad copter will automatically hover .

This is a quad copter that is extremely well-suited for aerobatics. It has a six axis flight controller and you can flip it either left or right, forward or backward.

It has two flying modes – one for beginners and other for more experienced fliers. Although this is a relatively small drone, it has very powerful motors and is thus very powerful.

Perhaps one of the best features of the Hubsan X4 is its camera which has a resolution of 720×480.While the camera certainly is not good enough for professional photographers, it’s more than enough for amateurs and folks just getting started with the hobby.

This is one of the most popular small drones right now. Measuring a mere 31 cm x 31 cm x 8 cm its somewhere in between micro and full-size quad copters.

With a flying time of about 7 min and a control range of 50 m, the batteries require about 100 min before they are fully charged. Needless to say, you would want to have at least one spare set of batteries.

This is another really good quad copter that is a lot of fun to fly. Its triple axis gyro-stabilization makes it a breeze to fly either outdoors or indoors. And the rotor blades are independently controlled.

While it does not come with a camera unlike the previous two models, this gets high ratings in our list because it flies extremely well.

It comes with two flying modes – one for experts and the other for beginners. The only drawback isits very low flying time – only around 4 min.

Traxxas is very famous for their extremely fast Traxxas X0-1 RC car. Now, they’re also manufacturing drones.

This model is very easy to fly because of its auto leveling six axis controller. It does not have a camera but its strengths are its very responsive, fast and durable.

If aerobatics are what you’re trying to master, this may be just what you’re looking for. You’ll be able to learn stunts a lot sooner with this one than perhaps with any other drone on the market today.

It flies for 10 min on a single charge and the included USB charger charges the batteries pretty fast.

This is possibly the smallest quad copter on the market today. It is great fun to fly, but ifyou’re someone who has never flown a quad copter in the past you would not want this to be yourvery first quad copter.

In general, drones as small as this one can be pretty hard to fly for newbies because they do not have all of the electronics that are needed for stable flight.

But if you are either an intermediate level or an experienced pilot, this is a great drone to fly.This is very small and very inexpensive but still you would not want to give this to a child who has never flown drone ever.

This is also a great quad for flying indoors. It is too small to cause any kind of damage eitherto your furniture or to someone in the room. That certainly is not the case with much bigger drones.

This model is a pretty good choice for beginners. It has just about everything you would want in a inexpensive beginner quad copter.

It has four different flight molds which makes it ideal for folks of any proficiency level. It has 1280 x 720 pixel camera which is pretty good considering how inexpensive this really is.

It comes with a crash cage – and crashes are far too common when you’re learning to fly. Included in the pack are 12 spare propellers and an extra battery.

This is a good drone for flying indoors. You can flight outdoors as well, but since it is very small even a slight wind can make it unstable resulting in a crash.

This is a ready to fly quad copter and requires no assembly whatsoever. It comes with propeller guards which keeps the motors safe.

If you’re searching for the best nano quad, this might be it. It is very inexpensive, very well-designed and the battery lasts for several minutes. It is just 2.75 inches across and is an excellent choice for flying indoors.

One thing you would want to remember about micro and nano quads is that these are in general not suitable for beginners.

As mentioned earlier, very small drones do not have the electronics that are required to keep a quad copter in stable flight.

Which is why unless you have some experience either with the simulator or with other electronically stabilized quads, you would not want to buy and nano quad when you’re just starting out.

This model has digital stabilization and has been built to withstand impacts. It also has a 720 pcamera. This would be an extremely good choice for beginners or even intermediate level pilots.

It is relatively inexpensive and very durable. It is digitally stabilized and can do aerobatics. These are qualities that make it ideal for anyone wanting to learn to fly a camera drone.

That said, you would not want to flight in windy conditions as this is a relatively lightweight quadcopter and strong gusts of wind can make it unstable.

It has a beginner flight mode and the high-speed flight mode. It can fly for between 7 to 9 min on a single charge and has a range of 30 m. And since the battery needs to be charged for two hours,you would want to buy a spare battery.

This is currently one of the hottest selling nano quad copter is today. In general, you would advise beginners to stay away from nano quads because most of them do not have all of the electronics required for stable flight.

But this one is an exception. This is really tiny drone comes packed with a lot of sophisticated electronics. Not only is it easy to fly, but it can perform complex stunts as well.

It is also really inexpensive – quads typically do not get cheaper than this. It has a 100 mAh lithium polymer battery and can flight for about 5 min on a single charge. In the batteries require about 30 min to recharge.

If you’re flying the drone and the batteries require to be recharged, the LEDs light up and you will know you need to land and recharge the batteries.

Technically, this is not a quad copter but it is a hexacopter as it has six rotors. It has six axis gyro stabilization. Included is a 720 p camera and a 2.4 GHz transmitter with four channels. You’ll need to buy four AA batteries for the transmitter, a micro-SD card for the camera and a screwdriver separately.

Since this model has six rotors, it makes more noise than your average quad copter. It has twoflying modes and flying time is around 10 min without the camera. If you are attach the camera,the flight time will be between 5 to 7 min.

If you have at least a bit of flying experience under your belt, this is one quad copter you would want to fly.

This little Nano drone can do 360° flips and other impressive stunts. It is very responsive to controls and has an excellent Yaw rate. While it is far too small to be flown outside in windy conditions, on a really calm day you can have a lot of fun flying it outdoors.

This is another really good quad copter and is suitable for beginners and intermediate level pilots. It comes included with landing gear and propeller guards.

The dual mode transmitter has an LCD monitor that displays battery remaining, throttle and other pieces of information. This is a really helpful feature.

With an unprecedented amount of choice now available, the list of features on offer can bewilder even the hardened drone enthusiast. We’ve reviewed a broad range to find the best models for all budgets and experience levels.

Two key things separate the current breed of flying machine from its relatively primitive forefather, the radio-controlled helicopter. The first is that they are much easier to fly thanks to the four-blade set up. This gives great stability and many models can hover in a static position if you let go of all of the controls, making the experience far more enjoyable and, hopefully, crash-free. The second is that they can take incredible pictures and video.

There are a few things to look out for that have the biggest impact on the piloting experience. We focused on ease-of-use, battery life, range and picture quality. Nail these and you can’t really go wrong.

Battery life is without-doubt the biggest limitation on most drones available at the moment. The propellers use a lot of power which either means a big, heavy power pack or a compromise on the flight time. Time between charges can be anywhere from just five minutes up to half an hour, depending on the model. Spare batteries really are a must, so factor this into your cost calculations.

Prices range from £10 for a mini quadcopter that’s great fun to fly around the living room, right up to many thousands for professional level drones with sophisticated features like automatic tracking and stabilised cameras.

We took our drones out for a spin in a London park, testing out their top speed, manoeuvrability and picture-taking abilities. You will notice that a couple of names dominate our list. This is simply because a small number of suppliers are currently way out ahead of the rest.

China-based DJI is the king of the drone world at the moment, with incredible attention to detail put into every product. The Mavic Pro is its latest release. It essentially bundles all of the impressive abilities of its bigger brother (The Phantom 4, see number five) into an unbelievably tiny package that you can fold up and throw in your hand luggage. The Mavic is the ultimate flying camera to take on holiday or an adventure sports weekend. With a top speed of 40mph it isn’t quite as fast as the Phantom but can track objects and automatically avoid obstacles in the same way. Considering its light weight, it can hold itself steady remarkably well, though it feels slightly more “jumpy” in flight than the Phantom. The camera has a narrower field of view but for most purposes this makes little difference. The quality is still razor-sharp 4K. The battery also lasts around 25 minutes and it has the longest range of all of the models we tested at 7km.

There is a lot to like about the Bebop 2 from the French drone specialists. It’s compact, stable and great fun to use, making it suitable for experts and newbies alike. It will fly to a range of 300m, which is plenty for most needs, and it has a 14MP camera which delivers decent 1080p footage. The version we tested also came with a virtual reality FPV headset, which gives a truly immersive flying experience, although you inevitably look a bit strange wearing it at the park. The slightly cartoony styling contrasts with the more stark sci-fi appearance of the pricier DJIs. In both look and features it fits neatly between the toy and “serious” models. There are a couple of minor gripes that let it down slightly. Unlike some of the more expensive models, it doesn’t have any removable storage, so once you’ve filled up the 8GB internal drive you have to wipe and start again. Also, the Wi-Fi connection between the controller and the drone cuts out a couple of times when it should have been within range, which is a little frustrating. Battery is good at 20 minutes. As with many of the drones we tested, you can control it with the Parrot app on your phone or connect it to a joystick controller which feels more natural.

Muscling in on DJI and Parrot’s position at the mid-to-high end of the market is relative newcomer, Yuneec, which burst onto the scene with its mean-looking Typhoon drone in 2015. The Breeze 4K is a different proposition entirely. It’s certainly aptly named as it couldn’t be easier to set up. You just fold out the four wings, install the smartphone app and get started. In the air it is nippy, if not electric, and it’s really easy to pilot with the intuitive on-screen controls. Unlike the Parrot and DJI models, it doesn’t have a compatible joystick controller but this is a relatively small drawback. With the tagline #myflyingcamera, it’s obvious this is aimed at those wanting to take selfies with a difference (“dronies”, apparently). It comes with a “follow me” mode, for the real narcissists among us that allows you to catch yourself from every angle. To complete the package, the Breeze comes with built-in social media connectivity so you can instantly show everyone how amazing your holiday is with a simple tap of the app. All-in-all this is a great drone for Instagram fans but don’t let that fool you into thinking this is a gimmick – it produces great 4K images. One issue is that the battery runs down quickly – you’ll only get twelve minutes on a single 40-minute charge. At 100m, the range is quite a bit less than the Bebop 2 but certainly enough, given what this drone is for.

Looking like a baby X-wing, this mini drone is a great starter machine for anyone unsure about the whole drone thing. Its unique design means it can fly like a traditional quadcopter or flip horizontally and move like a plane, which allows it to go faster – up to 18mph, according to Parrot, which is impressive for a drone at this price. It felt a little slower than this in our test flight, partly down to the wind. The wings make it look like something Luke Skywalker would fly but for this budget they are made from polystyrene. This keeps the craft light and easy to manoeuvre but does make it prone to a gust of wind. The Swing is controlled via the simple Parrot smartphone app and comes with a controller that you snap your smartphone into. It’s basically exactly the same as a PlayStation controller so unless you’ve never used a games console, you’ll find it very intuitive. A range of 30m and a battery life of around 20 minutes make this a good drone to take to the park to practice your pilot skills. It’s very easy to use, so highly recommended as a family toy. The 640×480 resolution camera is functional but the images it produces are fairly grainy.

The Phantom range is DJI’s best seller, for good reason – out of the box, it is a beautiful piece of sleek, white plastic, and when it gets into the air it is fantastically responsive and boasts an unrivalled set of features. It darts around exactly where you want it to at a breakneck 20 metres per second (45mph), yet still captures silky footage thanks to the gimbal-mounted camera and the steadiness of the machine itself. It will hold its position even in moderate winds and always feels sturdy and reliable. Even for the novice, it’s easy to handle, via the controller provided, using your phone or tablet for first person view. It’s the Phantom’s impressive set of tricks that set it apart, however. Tap an object in view your phone and the drone will lock onto it as you fly around to capture footage from all angles. It can also track moving objects. Battery life is a respectable 25 minutes and the range is 5km, though we never got to test this last statistic.

This pocket-sized drone comfortably fits in the palm of your hand, but somehow manages to fit a camera on board. Video is streamed live to a 4.3” screen on the controller. At 720×240 pixels, it’s comparatively low-res but to get first-person view on a drone at this price is impressive. It’s also very useful as the tiny x4 can quickly disappear from view. The controller is really easy to operate and you’ll be able to use it straight out of the box without referring to the instructions. It’s also comfortingly retro in its styling – think Sega Game Gear circa 1990. The in-built screen means no need for a smartphone app. The Hubsan is great fun to fly, zipping around like an electronic mosquito, the controls are responsive and novices will pick it up in no time. Bear in mind that this machine weighs just 58g, so it can’t handle wind. It also doesn’t have the GPS that allows more expensive drones to hover in a steady position so you have to keep adjusting the controls, which can make it easier to crash. Luckily this little machine is tough – I crashed it several times and it still worked perfectly fine. Battery life is only about eight to nine minutes but spares can be picked up for a few pounds so are well worth the investment. It will fly up to 100m away before going out of range.

This is a fantastic little all-rounder that competes with the Hubsan for best entry-level drone. It also has a first-person view camera that streams live to a screen in the controller. The camera is sharper than the x4’s, delivering HD picture quality. The T-series also has the added benefit of an auto-hover function, which makes it easier to fly for beginners. In the air it can perform some great stunts like a 360 degree flip and the slick black frame with led lights look cool. The range is decent enough at 40m. The downside is the battery lasts just seven minutes, but it comes with a spare.

For beginners looking to hone their drone skills with an inexpensive bit of kit, the Hubsan and Parrot Swing are great choices. For those with a little more cash to spend, we really like the Phantom 4. Video quality is phenomenal and it’s quick and manoeuvrable with great features like tracking and automatic obstacle avoidance. That said, the winner in this group has to be the Mavic Pro. It matches the Phantom 4 in most areas but has the massive benefit of being so portable.

In my last post on the Q500. I mentioned that my brother was headed to Peru in February, 2017. Last night, I talked to him about drones and he really wanted to save some space during his travels, and felt that DJI sized drones (The Q500 included) was going to be just too large for what he wanted. Needless to say, just from looking at the quadcopter, there’s something really different about this one. It’s camera.

Most toy-class drones offer a standard 720P pinhole camera that’s either mounted to the belly of the drone, or fully integrated into the body. The JJRC H26W is a bit different as it has a more “professional” camera mount, and remotely adjustable 3mp 720P camera that actually has a wide angle 140° lens!

One of the latest drones that have come to my attention is the UpAir One. This drone is said to be a long range FPV drone that comes with either a 2K or 4K camera that is comparable to a GoPro.

The UpAir one has a very similar body style to a DJI Phantom, and has been on the market since November 2015. The company that produces the UpAir One was bought out around the lunar new year earlier this year and went through a major reorganization to become what it is now.

The reason that’s important is because the old company sold the “UpAir Chase One” while under the new company (a hostile takeover from what I understand) it was renamed to “UpAir One”, and the latter is what we’re looking at in this review.

If you want to get into FPV Drone flying, the JDX 509G is a very good place to start. It comes with everything you need to get started, and the drone comes out of the box essentially ready to fly (RTF). Immediately, you find that you just have to charge up the battery, attach the camera and rotor blades and you’re good to fly.

The Hubsan X4 H107C uses the newest 6-axis flight control system available. It’s intended for stunts, and you’re able to flip it four ways (left, right, forward and backward). It has both an advanced flying mode and a beginner’s flying mode. This little drone packs a big punch for its size, and has surprisingly powerful motors. There’s an SD camera included, which records at 720 x 480 resolution, but obviously this drone isn’t intended for photographers. It has a flight time of around 7 minutes, and has a control range of nearly 100 meters. There are other Hubsan X4 models available, like the Hubsan H107D X4 mini. but when you consider the bang for your buck factor, the H107C is the best of the bunch. Of course, the award-winning RC Sky Viper Drones deliver hobby-level performance and parts that don’t break easily. The UDI RC 818A Quadcopter with camera is the best entry-level drone with a camera for sale right now. Its low entry price and durability make it the perfect option for those that have no idea what they’re doing and are just starting out in the wonderful world of toy drones. The camera records at an SD resolution of 640×480. It doesn’t fly well in wind because of its low weight. The UDI 818A is the perfect drone for learning flips as it does flips at the touch of a button. It also has two flight modes, one of which is for beginners, while the other is for high speed flight. This drone has a flying time of 7-9 minutes and a limited controlling distance of up to 30 meters. The LiPo battery takes approximately two hours to charge, so it recommended if you are purchasing this drone that you buy a spare battery.

The Heli-Max 1SQ is another great option that is tons of fun to fly. It has four independently controlled rotor blades and uses Triple Axis Gyro Stabilization for easy indoor and outdoor flight. It doesn’t have a fancy remote or high quality camera onboard — although there is a VCAM version that does have a camera — but what it flies incredibly well. It’s also one of the best-looking toy drones, having a fierce orange, black and white design. It’s one of the coolest-looking micro drones on the market, we’d say. It’s easy to fly and has an expert and beginner mode. The Heli-Max 1SQ has a very low flight time, with normal flights unfortunately lasting roughly 4 minutes. But you can buy extra batteries to maximize your fun.

The Syma 5XC is the best selling RC hobby drone on Amazon right now, and has 61% of reviewers rating it a full 5 stars. It measures just 31cm x 31cm x 8cm, so it’s not quite micro and it’s not quite a full-size drone. It has a flight time of roughly 7 minutes, and takes around 100 minutes to charge fully. It is controllable up to 50m (which is great for a toy drone). This drone comes with an HD camera that records 720p, and there’s room for a microSD card. The Holy Stone mini RC quadcopter is also a highly well-received toy drone among Amazon reviewers, with 55% of them rating it at 5 stars. It has an easy flip button, and its controller feels like a video game pad (so it’s familiar and easy to fly). It has a 1280 x 720 pixel video/photo camera that is better quality than Syma’s. It also has 4 different sensitivity modes for any level pilot. It comes with a bonus battery and 12 extra blades. It also comes with a crash cage to protect it.

Of course, if you’re looking for the ultimate Nano drone, the Sky Viper Nano Drone M200 is the clear winner. It’s the best nano drone on the market, in my opinion. Its battery is comparatively long-lasting, and it offers hi-tech performance at a fantastic price ($29.99). I’ve spent an extensive amount of time with this little bugger, as it makes a great desk toy because of its size. It’s just 2.75″ from blade to blade. It works very well indoors, and surprisingly, it can be used outdoors without many issues (although, obviously, a light wind could carry it away). It has an adjustable sensitivity that offers precision controls for any experience level. It’s American made, and you can find it at most of the big box retailers without any issues.

Consider these words: Become a spy from the comfort of your own home. That’s right, thanks to the wonders of modern technology, you can be an armchair James Bond. Forget years of training, special skills, physical fitness, or a suave demeanor. Now all you need to become a spy is one of the these badass drones. With any of these UAVs you can run your neighborhood watch, see if it is the UPS man at the door or Triad assassins, or catch your daughter sneaking out.

Oh, if you want, you can also use them to make movies. take still photographs, perform research, or anything else your heart desires. Just remember, it is all part of your cover.

If you already own a GoPro, then you can buy the original Phantom, but if you want a quadcopter with a camera built-in, then you’ll need the much-improved Phantom 2 Vision. It will cost just under $1000, but is also one of the easiest drones to operate for beginners and pros alike.

Whether you just got into the drone market, or are looking to get your kids to earn their spying and surveillance merit badges, the X4 is the gateway to basic drone operation. It is the only camera drone under $100 you should buy. It feels like a student driver car, but will let you learn to fly before you can soar. It comes with two modes: Basic and Advanced. Each mode limits the abilities of the operator so that they can ease their way into the great world of drone operation and amateur spying. It isn’t overloaded with features and the camera only points straight ahead, but even an inexperienced pilot can keep it aloft, perform some aerial stunts, and decide whether or not drones are for them.

Let’s just get this out of the way. If you are a fan of drones, quadcopters, or any consumer-grade UAV, then you probably already own a Parrot. If you don’t, then you must have just gotten out of prison. Well, then it’s time to taste freedom, convict. The 2.0 Power Edition is a true upgrade from both the original and the standard 2.0. There is a reason it is the most popular drone in circulation. It offers about 20 minutes of flight time powered by swappable 1500mAh batteries and shoots in stunning 720p. If you want to mount a GoPro or one of the other amazing action cameras on the market onto the 2.0, then you’ll need a separate rig, but once attached you’ll get steady video every time. It supports WiFi streaming and has a 300 ft. range, all for under $350. Most impressively, you can set up a whole fleet of 2.0’s to work in unison like a mechanical murder of crows.

Iris is the drone you buy when you want to make lazy surveillance look stylish. It comes equipped with the Pixhawk autopilot system which allows you to program automated takeoff and landing, automatic return to home base, customizable mission parameters, and the ability to circle and patrol. It has no camera itself, but does come with a GoPro mount that can be customized to fit other action cameras. You can only expect 10 to 15 minute flights from it out of the box, but hardware upgrades are possible. It’s a little pricey at more than $700 (not to mention you’ll need to add a GoPro for camera functions) but if you want fire-and-forget reconnaissance, then Iris will provide.

Do you have an inheritance that you don’t know how to spend? The S1000 can help with that. While most suggestions are meant to land in the average consumer’s price range, this $4,000 miracle from DJI had to be mentioned because it accomplishes many of the same feats as drones that cost twice as much. It is geared toward the serious researcher or hardcore surveillance fiend that needs quiet operation, steadiness, and maximum lift. The reason for the price is the extremely lightweight body that can lug some of the heaviest cameras around. The eight propellers give stability and clarity that is simply unmatched. The undercarriage camera mount is user-friendly and easy to master. The S1000 was built with power and stability in mind. It comes with no frills.

The CoaX is a drone in name only. In reality it is a tiny, superintelligent computer that also knows how to fly like a leaf on the wind. If that doesn’t frighten you, then the $5,000 price tag almost certainly will. The intent for this machine is heavy research or silent high-definition recon – though they won’t tell you that on the box *wink*. What sets the CoaX apart is it is totally autonomous. It has two cameras, WiFi, and the Linux-based Gumstix Overo microcomputing system that can be loaded with programs and software. It comes with pressure sensors and four (that’s right 4!) sonar sensors. It is made for upgrades and can be given IR range finders or whatever other diabolical attachments you can cook up. It makes the ideal gift for the NSA agent in your life. And don’t kid yourself, you have one whether you know it or not.

Taking to the skies is an impressive feat, but don’t forget that most of the world is covered in water. For the amateur oceanographer, marine biologist, or the aquatic spy that wants to know what nefarious plots are unfolding under the sea, there is the Ziphius. It zips through the waves at 6 mph (about 5.2 knots) and shoots video and still photographs in full 720p. It has the same standard range of its aerial counterparts at approximately 300 feet and is controlled entirely from an app on your phone or tablet. Most importantly, it has a plate on its back that can be swapped out to perform different functions such as holding a second camera for extra video or holding onto your beer as you float around in the pool. Ziphius is not on the market yet, but you can pre-order for the introductory price of $199.

A Chinese company called AEE has put out a Phantom clone called the Toruk that is making promises that would seriously change the outlook of the drone market. Information is sketchy at this point, thanks to the notoriously tight-lipped Chinese, but they are claiming that the Toruk will have 1080i and 1080p camera functionality that will work at 60fps and 30fps respectively while using a 120 degree field of vision. They also claim that it will be able to fly in the rain and carry 4 3300mAh batteries. Too good to be true? Probably, but still an interesting idea.
